Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Successfully Undergoes Pacemaker Implantation
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has undergone a successful pacemaker implantation procedure on Sunday morning, as reported by his office and the Sheba Medical Center. The decision for the surgery was made due to recent health concerns surrounding the 73-year-old Prime Minister.
Following the completion of the procedure, a joint statement was released stating, "The procedure is over. The PM feels fine, he will stay for a few hours at the hospital and will be discharged later today." In light of the surgery, the scheduled cabinet meeting for Sunday had to be postponed.
Netanyahu personally announced the need for a pacemaker in a Twitter video early Sunday morning. In the video, he shared, "A week ago I was fitted with a monitoring device. That device beeped this evening and said I must have a pacemaker and that I must do this already tonight. I feel great, but I need to listen to my doctors."
Pacemakers are medical devices that send electric pulses to the heart chambers to regulate the heartbeat rate and rhythm, according to medical experts.
The announcement coincided with a Knesset vote on Israeli judicial reform, and Netanyahu mentioned ongoing efforts to reach a broad agreement during his statements.
Last week, the Prime Minister was hospitalized for severe dehydration, and during that period, a heart monitor was placed in his chest to address potential cardiac concerns. Netanyahu attributed the dehydration incident to his time spent at the Sea of Galilee without access to water or sun protection during a heat wave, with temperatures soaring up to 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit).
The Prime Minister's office stated that he will continue to undergo additional routine tests as per his doctors' recommendations.
Netanyahu's proposed judicial overhaul has faced criticism from many Israelis. Over 1,100 Israeli air force pilots and aircrew expressed concerns about the potential impact on the security of the State of Israel and their trust in the government, vowing to suspend their voluntary reserve duty if the legislation proceeds.
As Netanyahu recovers from the pacemaker implantation, the nation keeps a close watch on both his health and the ongoing debates surrounding the proposed judicial reforms.
